lthough he worked for the Chicago Tribune Lingle never wrote an article, he was the guy the reporters went to for deep information in regard to gangsters, politicians, and the police. Even though he wasn’t paid a lot as a reporter he lived a lavish lifestyle. On the morning of June 8, 1930 while walking in a crowded underground passageway Lingle was shot in the back of the head. Dead. Written by a reporter for the Chicago Tribune, John Boettiger, this book thoroughly covers the in-depth investigation that went into the hunt for Lingle’s killer, culminating in the arrest and conviction of Leo Vincent Brothers, but, unfortunately, the one who paid to have Lingle killed (most likely Capone) is not brought to justice.

An excellent contemporary look at the workings of the underworld of Chicago.
